Leptospirosis in cattle in South Africa

Leptospirosis, an infectious disease of both animals and humans, is caused by infection with bacteria of the genus Leptospira. Leptospirosis in cattle may be manifested by different clinical syndromes such as a transient febrile response, a life threatening haemolytic crisis, chronic interstitial nephritis, mastitis, abortions, stillbirths and reproductive failure in cattle. Leptospirosis is an important zoonotic disease.
